Let's begin~!
The best place to start with this article is to give some examples of 'fairy-kei' co-ordinations~
Hopefully, the following pictures should help you to grasp what you should look for!
Mostly 'milklim' brand is used here... Making this an expensive outfit. |
Modelling for a fashion magazine, but the basic features are still shown~ |
Credit goes to 'sniicosplay' - another featured petticoat~! |
This ventures more towards 'decoden' style, but the petticoat is a featured item~! |
The main focus point for fairy-kei fashion is that it consists of pastel colours, mainly shades of pink, yellow or blue, although mint-green has also become popular!
It's quite a bubby, fun style choice, and it's also very simple to grasp, because basically, anything pastel will do! It really is that easy!! And, if you know what to look for, affordable clothes are at hand~
It makes me sad to see that most people that enjoy the fairy-kei style are unable to wear it themselves, because everything that they believe 'fits the style' is way too expensive... This isn't true! I personally haven't indulged in this fashion style yet, but, I will be after the new year. Right now, I'm saving for my super-secret cosplay~!
Back-on-topic... The last two example pictures I used, you'll be surprised to find that some of the things they're wearing are actually on my fairy-kei budget list! It just goes to show, you really do need to keep your eye out. Sometimes, searching 'fairy-kei fashion' on Google isn't always a great idea, because items labelled as being 'fairy-kei' are usually really expensive, whereas, the things that aren't labelled this way, tend not to be so expensive...
The first item I'll talk you through is the petticoat, or 'pannier' if you want to sound more refined~!
It's a very popular item in most examples of fairy-kei fashion, although that doesn't necessarily mean that you have to own a petticoat for your style to be complete. It just makes life easier if you can invest in a few, because they go with most things, and it makes putting outfits together a lot easier!
This is what happens if you search 'fairy-kei skirt' on Etsy or Storenvy... Sure, you'll get what you're looking for, but for stupid amounts of money! Like, woah! And before you turn around and think Ebay'll have what you're looking for... They don't, at all. Ebay does not carry any fairy-kei petticoats. Soooo... If you're wanting to try and find one second-hand, you naturally turn to places like Etsy and Storenvy, because usually, the stores have cheap stuff... But...
I wasn't pleased with what I found... And there are 2 reasons, which I will state after my examples:
This is your typical fairy-kei soft, floaty-looking petticoat, and it's actually quite nice... But, then we look at the price on this little baby and suddenly... $25, and that's not even including shipping rates. That's crazy amounts of money, considering it's very thing tulle materials being used here...
So, here's what I'm going to do with this example... I'm going to find another petticoat that's similar, and I'm going to compare prices.
This is 'Bodyline's 'pan013', which, if your memory doesn't fail you, you'll notice that we've seen already in this article... Because, it's the pannier used by one of my fashion examples. Now, talking about Bodyline's reputation for their pannier, it's so-so. However, only the lower part of this pannier is going to be seen, and that's thick enough that it's not see-through. The top part will be covered by a t-shirt or jacket or something, so it's fine. Also, if you'll look at my fourth outfit example, which is where this pannier is shown, you can buy multiple pannier and layer them. Not only does this prevent it being see-through, but it also adds puffiness which, in turn, adds cuteness to your outfit! This particular pannier costs only £11, with £6 shipping. ~~

This pannier is by the same people as the first one listed above... However, for some reason it doesn't quite look as luxurious... This again costs $25, which, if I'm not prepared to pay that for the first one, I'm certainly not going to pay for this... Luckily enough though, Bodyline also does Purple versions of their pannier!
In fact, Bodyline carries this particular style of pannier in a whole variety of colours, so you'll be sure to find a shade that matches your outfit choice! Again, this pannier is £11.
This is my next example, taken from Etsy... The price is £27 for one, not including shipping, and to be honest... I really wouldn't pay that. It's only one colour, which makes it less interesting, yet it costs more than the first pannier I showed... T-T
Bodyline's 'acc029' costs £16, comes in a wide range of colours (not all are shown) and is much higher material quality. It looks softer, it's cheaper, and there's more colour variety. Not bad, Bodyline!~
I don't have any more 'bad' examples, so instead, I'll introduce another Bodyline pannier, because this was also shown in one of my example images... 3rd image, the blonde girl is wearing 'pan048' which costs £11, is good quality, not see-through, has colour variation and also looks super-cute!
This pannier is actually quite pretty, and I have a feeling it'll be the first pannier I buy when I start to build my fairy-kei collection~! Kirei, ne? ;D
That was the only thing I wanted to use the Bodyline website for, sooooo... That means we're done with the pannier section!
So, for t-shirts, I'll start off by using Pinkly Ever After's 'Love Love Friendship' t-shirt!
This is currently for sale at $21, which is a little bit pricey, but, I love PEA too much not to include it! So, here it is! And, it's not specifically for fairy-kei style, you could mix and match it to suit any outfit really! It's super-cute, and it's good quality. Also, if you purchase this, you'd be supporting the lovely Robin Joobin~~~~~
A brand you kinda want to avoid is 'milklim', they're really cute and super-duper popular for their pastel colour clothing within the fairy-kei scene, however, they're really, ultra, mega expensive. Plus, you have to use shipping services to buy from them, because, unlike Bodyline, they don't ship outside of Japan... So... Unless you want to spend like, £56 on one skirt, avoiddddd themmmmmmmmm.
One item from milklim would be okay, if it was a t-shirt that could be co-ordinated a lot... :3
This long-sleeved shirt from Etsy is really popular, but with popularity comes high prices... £44.28 is a pretty high price for a more-or-less plain-looking top, so... I'd avoid this, too. Unless you want to throw tonnes of money at people who like to over-charge products. ^w^
This 'My Little Pony' style t-shirt from Milkshop on Etsy is perfect. It's cute, pastel, and it's also affordable! £17.75 ~~
There's also this t-shirt, which I really like, by The Kawaii Machine on Etsy. It's really cute, and I like how sparkly the design is! This is only £14.72, so I recommend items like this! It also comes in different pastel shades, so it can be co-ordinated well~!
Also from The Kawaii Machine is this adorable t-shirt, which costs £16.72 and is definitely worth the money~!
Also by Milkshop is this shooting-star design t-shirt, roughly based on the signature shooting-star by popular Harajuku clothing brand '6%DokiDoki'~! This costs £17.75 :3
For accessories, I really recommend the shop 'Little Mizz Kitty' on Etsy, I've recently purchased quite a lot from her, and I'll make a post about what I brought once it has all arrived (I placed separate orders uwu) Basically, her shop sells the cutest little things, and everything is priced really well! Nothing is too expensive, and it all looks fab, plus, as a bonus, everything is one-off. Meaning, if you purchase things from her shop, nobody else is going to have the same stuff as you, because she makes it all by hand and only one of each item. ^w^
Also, the Etsy shop 'Kreepy Kawaii' is reasonably priced and sells a lot of cute accessories, too!
So, be sure to go check them out~~!
The Storenvy store 'Sweet Spirits' is cute, but slightly more pricey as items are shipped from the US, however, they make up for it in the quality and over-all kawaii-ness of their products!
This is a rough idea of the kind of accessories that fit with fairy-kei style~! It looks so cute when it's all put together like this! ^w^
That's all for this article, I hope you enjoyed reading about fairy-kei style, and I hope I've been useful in directing you towards cheaper alternatives to fit this fashion style. It's totally cute, pastel-coloured and fun to wear, so I suggest checking it out~!
