So, I'm sure every follower of the Japanese rock movement heard about MIYAVI's most recent song release, 'SECRET' back in June...
I'm still trying to recover from the music video, and the lyrics, well...
Inappropriate, MIYAVI! Inappropriate!
But, that's not actually what I wanted to talk about...
What really bothers me is MIYAVI's new music style. If I'm honest, I don't like it at all.
I think it transformed him from being really sexy and well put-together, to just downright trashy.
He's become the same as everyone else, which really irritated me
The reason I originally supported MIYAVI was the fact that he was very unique as an artist...
For example:
His songs mostly consisted of his voice + his guitar + drums. And that was it.
No fancy effects or anything else, just the beautiful simplicity of that arrangement.
And that worked really well for him, he sounded amazing, and it showed off his talents.
Also, the simplicity of his music videos was something that caught my eye.
There was nothing overly-flashy about them, and nothing really self-righteous.
But now...
He's moved more towards electro/dance music, which was a MASSIVE shock for me.
Especially considering that his older music was pretty dark, dance is the last genre I pictured MIYAVI moving into, but, that's definitely where he's ended up...
The release of the song 'Horizon' really sealed the deal for my that his music has changed a lot.
The annoyingly generic beat, put with tonnes of effects and lots and lots of sound layers...
It's like he's a completely different person now. The simplicity has gone.
And in its place, is a big mess of various sounds that just don't fit my little rock god.
As for the music video... It felt like some awkward re-enactment of Zulu, or at least a re-make of Shakira's 'Waka Waka' video. Way too tribal themed for someone who's classed as a rock musician.
I don't know if the video was down to MIYAVI's personal preferences or not, but it certainly didn't do him any favors.
I know there are a lot of people that agree with me, in the sense that he's no longer himself, and his music just doesn't feel the same anymore. And the people that feel this way are most likely in a similar situation to me, where they've supported MIYAVI for many, many years, and have been saddened by the loss of his originality.
Those who disagree... Most of the time, they're people who only got into MIYAVI's music through his most recent works, and so, they've never bothered to listen to his older music, thus, assume that this new dance-type is the stuff he's always produced, which we all know just isn't true!
Quite frankly, I just want to 'old' MIYAVI back. The man who could look so confident and amazing just stood there with his bass, as his drummer played a rhythm and he sang over the top of it. That in itself was enough for me, and he always, always sounded fantastic back then. I miss hearing that type of music from him, and I know myself and many, many others will be deeply saddened if he continues down the line of more electronic music. T-T
